Ben and Craig have been working together for over 8 years, custom building log stores, arbours, extensions, barns and timber frame houses for clients across Scotland and in Alaska.

The Carpenters:

Craig Thomson

Craig was born and bred in Fife on the east coast of Scotland. He, too, is a keen artist and extremely skilled craftsperson. Craig knows everything there is to know about traditional carpentry, scribe rule and how to design these magical wooden buildings. I don’t believe there is another carpenter quite like Craig in Scotland. He creates our structural and CAD drawings, working alongside architects and engineers, which is extremely useful when you are in the planning stage. Craig is so passionate about his work that he often creates a beautiful joint, that won’t be seen by anyone else, just for the satisfaction of including it in the design…

Ben Whitney

Ben grew up in Botswana and moved to Scotland for University in Dundee. He graduated at the top of his class in DJCAD and received a scholarship to live and work in Florence. It was at University that he met Craig and after graduation went on to work for Thomson Timber, Craig’s dad’s company, based in Fife. Ben has a background in sculpture, design and set building, which he incorporates in to his timber framing work. He loves to consult with clients on design and layouts to make their visions a reality. Ben is a problem solver. Be careful what you ask him to do - no matter how challenging, he will find a way to do it!

Joanna Susskind-Whitney

Joanna’s first job after graduating from a Masters in Animation, was at The Glasgow School of Art as part of the Scottish 10 3D laser scanning team. In this role she learnt a lot about architecture, building, design and project management. She now runs a creative production studio, and when the opportunity arose to embark on a self-build project smack-bang in the middle of the city, Joanna got to work planning, budgeting & designing along with Ben. Joanna loves working with clients, project managing and consulting on design ideas.
